When should women stop working when they're pregnant?

Watch today's Sunrise segment HERE. 3 new studies out of great Britain and the US find that working past 8 months- regardless of the job decreases the weight of your baby by an average of 230g. That means there is a higher risk of having a low birth weight baby.

The so what in that is that low birth weight babies (who weigh 2500g or less) are at higher risk of breathing, brain and bowel problems in that tiny newborn stage, more behaviour issues as children and more obesity, diabetes and heart disease as adults. These are all statistics but they're still a worry if your maternity leave is scheduled for the day before the big arrival.

My advice;

1. Take care of yourself. Don't smoke. get as much rest as is practical, eat well and do regular exercise. Control the things you can to make your baby as healthy as possible.

2. Good antenatal care. your midwife, GP or obstetrician should be able to pick if your baby is small. An ultrasound can confirm it. If your baby is growing well, you're OK. There's no evidence that having a 3.1kg baby is worse than having a 3.35kg baby so don't fret.

3. If you find out your baby is small, think about giving up work at the 36 week mark to help your baby grow.

Hope that helps! xx
